Philanthropist of the Year and Role Models Honored at "Champagne & Chocolates” Event 

The St. Mary Parish Foundation (SMPF) Board of Directors honored Dr. Alan M. Hoberman and the late Dr. Mildred S. Christian as St. Mary Parish’s 2016 Leaders in Philanthropy Awards recipients along with St. Mary Parish Role Models from six different industries (agriculture, arts, business, education, healthcare, public service or volunteerism).

(Franklin, LA) – The St. Mary Parish Foundation (SMPF) and over 100 community members gathered yesterday at Shadowlawn to toast the St. Mary Parish 2016 Leaders in Philanthropy and role models from different industries.

The event honored Dr. Alan M. Hoberman and Dr. Mildred S. Christian (1942 – 2009) as St. Mary Parish’s 2016 Leaders in Philanthropy for their generous contributions in donating Shadowlawn to the St. Mary Parish Chapter of the Louisiana Landmarks Society and establishing a $500,000 endowment for the perpetual maintenance and restoration of the property.

The inaugural 2016 St. Mary Parish Role Models were honored for their outstanding commitment to St. Mary Parish and their efforts to make the community a better place through their different fields. The following role models were recognized: Danny Luke, agriculture; Lisa Parsiola, arts; Jeremy Callais, Business; Niki Fryou, education; Drs. Bill and Abby Cefalu, healthcare; Matthew and Phyllis Glover, public service or volunteerism.

St. Mary Parish Foundation Chair Greg Hamer, Sr. said, "We are very pleased with the turnout for this event. Our guests are not only helping us recognize and thank those who do so much for our community, but they are also supporting our annual grant cycle and other philanthropic activities for the year.”

The honorees were toasted with champagne during a brief recognition ceremony following which guests had the opportunity to meet and mingle with them.

The event was sponsored by Brenda and Gregory Hamer, Sr.; Gina and Joe Sanford; and Guidry Mineral Investments, LLC and Thomson Smith & Leach Insurance Group. Event proceeds are funding the St. Mary Parish Foundation’s philanthropic activities throughout the year.

The St. Mary Parish Foundation is an affiliate of Community Foundation of Acadiana and has a separate board of directors, specifically for the benefit of St. Mary Parish.
