A longtime Morgan City-area attorney and philanthropist received recognition posthumously Saturday along with his widow for their great contributions to the community.

St. Mary Parish Foundation, an affiliate of the Community Foundation of Acadiana, recognized its 2017 St. Mary Parish Leaders in Philanthropy and 2017 Role Models during its annual "Walk the Red Carpet” Gala at the Petroleum Club of Morgan City.

The late Alfred Sol Lippman and his wife of 60 years, Gail Poche Lippman, were honored as the 2017 St. Mary Parish Leaders in Philanthropy for their outstanding contributions to the community.

Al Lippman, 78, died Oct. 17, 2016. He was living in Lafayette, but had lived in Berwick for many years and practiced law in Morgan City for about 50 years.

"The name Alfred S. Lippman was a household name for us as it was for so many,” Community Foundation of Acadiana President Raymond Hebert said. "He was a good friend of mine, and I miss him dearly.”

Lippman served on the community foundation board for several years and almost two years as chairman.

Hebert described Lippman as "visionary” and "never lacking in opinion." Lippman also showed an "uncompromising commitment to Gail and his family,” Hebert said.

His former law partner Tommy Mahfouz said, "Al was the finest lawyer between New Orleans and Houston. He was a great lawyer, but he was a great family man.”

He helped many people during his lifetime, Mahfouz said.

Mahfouz told a story that demonstrated Lipmman’s character.

One day an employee at their law firm came into Mahfouz’s office and said that Lippman had just come to her office because he knew she was struggling financially and her husband was unemployed.

Lippman closed the door and handed her $2,000 and told her not to tell anyone, Mahfouz said.

"That’s the kind of person he was. There was never a time that people couldn’t come to him for help,” Mahfouz said.

"I can’t tell you how many times I would see the priests that I knew, the protestant ministers that I knew would come to the office,” Mahfouz said. "And I would think, ‘they’re coming to talk to me.’ They were speaking with Mr. Lippman. That’s the respect that people had for Al.”

The foundation also honored seven role models in six different categories who work to make the community a better place through their support and charitable giving.

The awardees in each category were the following: Clint Judice, agriculture; Dominique Thomas, arts; Victoria Simoneaux, business; Claire Guarisco, education; Drs. Jared and Carla Thurston, and Nakisha Singleton, public service-volunteerism.

Judice is co-owner and manager of Northside Planting, a family sugarcane farm in Franklin.

Thomas is owner of Dominique’s Studio of Dance and Fitness which she started 22 years ago with a focus on the dance disciplines of ballet, tap and jazz.
Simoneaux is a finan-cial advisor and partner with her father, Lyle Simoneaux, in Franklin.

Dr. Carla Thurston practices as an internist with South Louisiana Medical Associates Comprehensive Health Clinic in Morgan City. Dr. Jared Thurston owns Thurston Ophthalmology in Morgan City and practices as a general ophthalmologist and eye surgeon.

Guarisco is supervisor of child nutrition for St. Mary Parish Schools. She has served the St. Mary Parish School system for 25 years as a teacher, curriculum facilitator, assistant principal and principal.

Singleton is regional manager for Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living where she’s played a major role in developing statewide tobacco-free health care policy protocols.
