The Community Foundation of Acadiana recognized the area's "leaders in philanthropy" Friday.
The organization's sixth annual Leaders in Philanthropy Awards luncheon celebrated two businesses — Acadian Companies and Chevron's Gulf of Mexico Business Unit — and several individuals who have made a philanthropic impact in their communities.
Those recognized, by parish, were:
Acadia Parish: Peggy and John Daniel Gielen III
Evangeline Parish: Anita M. Fontenot
Iberia Parish: Phil and Reneé Haney
Lafayette Parish: Ruth and James Devin Moncus
St. Landry Parish: Sue Soileau Brignac
St. Martin Parish: Roy and Catherine Poché
St. Mary Parish: Dr. Alan M. Hoberman and Dr. Mildred S. Christian (1942-2009)
Vermilion Parish: N.R. Broussard
These recipients have made an impact in their community by giving to nonprofits, churches and schools and were submitted by their peers and people they've touched in those communities, said Erin Winder, community and development director for the Community Foundation of Acadiana.
Winder explained that the annual selection process for the awards begins with nominations from people in the community, from which a past board of directors selects "standouts" and the current board of directors approves final recipients.
The actions and donations of these "leaders in philanthropy" align with CFA's mission.
"Our core purpose is to connect all generous people to the causes they care about," Winder said. "Generosity is at the heart of what we do. ... The community overall benefits from philanthropy, so we want to encourage that however we can."
"And they don't advertise it (about themselves)," she continued. "We want to let people know."
Friday's event at the Cajundome Convention Center featured keynote speaker Ralph de la Vega, vice chairman of AT&T and CEO of AT&T Business Solutions and AT&T International. He also authored the book "Obstacles Welcome: Turn Adversity to Advantage in Business and Life."
