James "Jim” Devin and Ruth Moncus to receive philanthropy award

(Lafayette, La.) Community Foundation of Acadiana (CFA) will honor James "Jim” Devin and Ruth Moncus at its sixth annual Leaders in Philanthropy Awards Luncheon on Nov. 11 at the Cajundome Convention Center. Doors open at 11 a.m., and the program is from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.

The Moncus’ have been selected to receive the 2016 Leaders in Philanthropy Award for Lafayette Parish for their outstanding generosity towards charitable initiatives.

Jim and Ruth share the same passion for faith in God, family, education, the arts and their community. Jim established the James Devin Moncus Family Foundation in 2005. The mission of the foundation is to support organizations and individuals in the fields of education, healthcare, animal welfare and the arts. Since 2008, Jim and Ruth have distributed well over $5,000,000 to those causes through the James Devin Moncus Family Foundation.

Jim served in the United States Marine Corp for four years. When he returned home, he found himself homeless, and he moved to Lafayette for a job opportunity offshore. Years later, he began brokering oilfield equipment and founded Devin International.

Ruth was a leader in the nursing community for 30 years and was known for her kindness and caring nature.

Jim and Ruth are among 13 individuals who will be recognized for making a positive impact in their communities through philanthropy:

  • Lafayette Parish – James Devin & Ruth Moncus
  • Acadia Parish – Peggy & John Daniel Gielen, III
  • Evangeline Parish – Anita M. Fontenot
  • Iberia Parish – Phil & Reneé Haney
  • St. Landry Parish – Sue Soileau Brignac
  • St. Martin Parish – Roy & Catherine Poché
  • St. Mary Parish – Dr. Alan M. Hoberman & the late Dr. Mildred S. Christian
  • Vermilion Parish – N. R. Broussard

In addition to the above award recipients, CFA will present corporate awards to Acadian Companies and Chevron – Gulf of Mexico Business Unit for their outstanding philanthropy in Acadiana. Nominations for all awards were submitted by the community and CFA's past board of directors made final selections.

Luncheon seats and tables are open to the public and are now on sale. Seats are $75 each, and tables of eight are $500 each.
