Community Foundation of Acadiana Announces the Palmetto Island State Park Fund
Lafayette, LA–-Community Foundation of Acadiana (CFA) announced today the creation of a new designated fund that will enable the Palmetto Island State Park to open and begin operating as early as October 28, 2010. CFA Executive Director Raymond Hebert said that several organizations, under the leadership of Lieutenant Governor Scott Angelle, joined together to make the opening of the park a reality.
"We met with State Representatives, Simone Champagne and Jonathan Perry, Lt. Governor Scott Angelle, State Senators Mike Michot and Nick Gautreaux, Dr. Stuart Johnson and Diane Mouton Allen with Office of State Parks, Vermilion Parish Tourist Commission and The Greater Abbeville-Vermilion Chamber of Commerce, to name just a few. But the driving force behind this effort was John T. Landry, a former State Parks Commission member. Mr. Landry actually started the Fund with his own money and was instrumental in bringing this issue to the public's attention,” said Hebert.
Community Foundation of Acadiana will play a major role in the ongoing operation of the park by making sure the Fund is maintained for the sole benefit of Palmetto Island State Park. Recently, Lt. Governor Scott Angelle announced a $400,000 commitment to get the park open immediately.
"The establishment of the Palmetto Island State Park Fund allows others to donate to the park in a transparent and secure manner. Donors can be confident that their tax-deductible contributions will be used only for the benefit of the park,” Hebert added.
Palmetto Island State Park is located 10 miles south of Abbeville on Highway 82 between Abbeville and Intracoastal City on 19501 Pleasant Road.
The mission of Community Foundation of Acadiana is to improve the quality of life in our region by increasing giving, connecting donors with what they care about, and providing leadership on community needs and opportunities.
