Kites Above Acadiana Kids Fund

Kites Above Acadiana, a fund at Community Foundation of Acadiana, strives to impact hospitalized children and their families in a meaningful way through a variety of initiatives such as play, education and housing.

PLAY

"Play is the work of a child." - Maria Montessori, Italian physician, educator and innovator

Play is integral to the physical and emotional development of a child. Play during hospitalization eases anxiety and fear by providing a comforting and familiar environment for children, while allowing them to continue to grow and develop..

AN EXAMPLE OF A FUTURE PLAY INITIATIVE:

• This fund will provide a safe and secure outdoor space for patients who are admitted to the hospital. This outdoor space will bring comfort and normalcy, as patients get fresh air, blow bubbles, draw with chalk, read, and play.

EDUCATION

"Whatever happens in one part of the (family) system – such as a child’s illness - is experienced in some way by all the family members.” - Robyn Hart and Judy Rollins

Illnesses affect the entire family. Parents often feel alone during treatment and are often in need of peer-to-peer support, in addition to diagnosis specific educational materials.

AN EXAMPLE OF A FUTURE PLAY INITIATIVE:

• Kites Above Acadiana will offer rotating Mom, Dad, and Couple nights out to connect with other patients who have children with similar diagnoses, while also providing educational resources.

HOUSING

"Our Houses are built on the simple idea that nothing else should matter when a family is focused on the health of their child” - Ronald McDonald House

Families travel from all over the state to receive medical care in Lafayette for chronic and terminal illnesses. Some families drive from as far as Alexandria, Morgan City, or DeRidder to receive care for their child.

AN EXAMPLE OF A FUTURE HOUSING INITIATIVE:

• The fund will provide housing for patients and their families who travel to Lafayette for medical care. Housing is important because families can be divided for weeks or months at a time, depending on diagnosis.

SUPPORT

"Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.” - Helen Keller
